The bee-first practices, explained
1. Leave the bees enough honey (no over-harvesting)
Honey is not a byproduct for the bees — it is their winter food, the energy that carries the colony through months without flowers. Sustainable beekeepers harvest only the genuine surplus and leave the rest. In temperate climates, a common rule of thumb is to leave roughly 18–23 kg (40–50 lb) of honey per colony heading into winter, and to never harvest from a young colony in its first year while it is still building reserves. 2. Use locally adapted, often native, bees
A bee that evolved for your landscape needs far less propping up than one shipped in from another continent. Across the Indian Himalaya, that native bee is Apis cerana indica, the Indian hive bee. It is relatively gentle, forages earlier in the morning and later into the evening than the European honey bee, and works happily in the cool, foggy, overcast conditions typical of the hills. Crucially, it is far better at defending itself against the Varroa mite — studies show Apis cerana is markedly faster than Apis mellifera at detecting and removing infested brood, a natural hygiene behaviour. The imported European bee, which evolved without Asian parasites, has little natural immunity, which is exactly why Varroa has devastated mellifera colonies worldwide.
The trade-off is honey volume: an Apis cerana colony holds only a few thousand workers and yields perhaps 12–25 kg a year, against the tens of thousands of workers in a European colony. Sustainable beekeeping accepts that lower yield as the price of a bee that largely looks after itself — needing, as researchers note, minimal sugar feeding, migration or disease control.
3. Diverse, pesticide-free forage
Bees are only as healthy as what they eat, and a hive parked beside a single sprayed crop is malnourished and chemically stressed.
