Real raw honey is one of the hardest products to buy in India. Supermarket shelves are dominated by sugar-syrup blends, "Himalayan" honey from labs in Punjab, and brands that have failed adulteration tests. We mapped where you can actually find real raw honey across 12 Indian cities — direct apiaries, verified brands, and what to avoid in each location.
This guide is updated for 2026 based on FSSAI licensing data, NMR lab testing reports, and on-ground visits to apiaries across Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, and Maharashtra.

What counts as "raw" honey in India
India's FSSAI raw honey standard requires three things:
- Not heated above 45°C at any stage of processing
- Not filtered through fine mesh that removes natural pollen
- Not blended with sugar syrup or any added sweetener
Most "honey" on Indian supermarket shelves fails at least one of these. The 2020 CSE adulteration investigation found many large brands using rice syrup or high-fructose corn syrup that escapes traditional purity tests. Modern NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) testing is the only reliable lab method.
For each city below, we list:
- Direct apiary options — actual beekeepers, freshest honey, hardest to source
- Verified brand outlets — brands with NMR testing or FSSAI raw-honey certification
- What to avoid — products that look raw but aren't

Quick verification checklist before you buy honey anywhere
Whether buying in a Mumbai supermarket or a Manali roadside stall, run this 30-second checklist:
- Does the label show FSSAI license number? (Mandatory for all packaged honey in India)
- Is the botanical/floral source named? ("Mustard honey", "Wild forest", "Eucalyptus" — not just "Multi-flora")
- Is the geographic source named at apiary level, not just country?
- Is there a batch number and harvest date?
- If the seller can't show you the NMR test result on request, treat with caution
- Run the cold water drop test when you get home — pure honey settles intact, adulterated dissolves
Frequently asked questions
Is Amazon a safe place to buy raw honey in India?
Mixed bag. Reputable raw honey brands sell on Amazon (Under The Mango Tree, Last Forest, Pahadi Source, 24 Mantra Organic), and Amazon offers buyer protection. However, the platform also hosts many unverified "Himalayan honey" or "wild honey" listings with anonymous sellers — these are high adulteration risk. Stick to brand storefronts, not generic listings.
Why is real raw honey so expensive in India?
Three reasons: (1) Hand-harvesting and cooperative procurement is labour-intensive, (2) NMR lab testing per batch costs ₹3000-5000, (3) Single-origin honey has lower yield than blended multi-source. Genuine raw honey at ₹400-700/300g reflects actual cost. Anything significantly below this is almost certainly blended or adulterated.
What's the difference between "raw", "organic", and "natural" honey labels?
"Raw" = not heated above 45°C, with natural pollen retained. "Organic" = produced from apiaries in pesticide-free zones (USDA, India Organic certifications). "Natural" = a marketing word with no legal meaning in India. Always look for the more specific "raw" claim with proof of testing.
Can I buy raw honey direct from a beekeeper without a brand intermediary?
Yes, and it's often the freshest option. Find them via: state KVIB (Khadi and Village Industries Board) outlets, agricultural extension offices, beekeeping cooperatives, and harvest-season farmers markets. Quality varies — ask for the apiary location, harvest date, and run the home tests when you get home.
Is supermarket honey under ₹300/500g real honey?
Almost certainly blended with sugar syrup or rice syrup. The economics don't work — real raw honey costs ₹600-800/kg at the apiary gate. Anything retailing at ₹250-300/500g has to be cut with cheap sweeteners to break even after packaging and distribution margins.
How long does raw honey last after I buy it?
Indefinitely. Properly stored raw honey doesn't expire — Egyptian tomb honey from 3,000 years ago is still technically edible. It may crystallise (normal — gently warm the jar in lukewarm water to liquefy) or darken over years (also normal). Store in an airtight jar away from direct sunlight.
I'm based in a small Indian city — what's my best option?
Online direct-to-consumer. The brands listed above all ship pan-India in 3-7 days. Pahadi Source, Under The Mango Tree, and Last Forest all have free shipping over ₹500-700 thresholds. Order in 2-jar bulk and store in a cool dark place.
The bottom line on buying raw honey in India
The hardest part of buying raw honey in India isn't the price — it's the information asymmetry. Most consumers don't know the FSSAI rules, don't recognise NMR testing, and trust brand names that have already failed adulteration tests.
The five rules that protect you anywhere:
- Pay attention to specific floral and geographic source — not just "premium" or "wild"
- FSSAI license number on the label is non-negotiable
- Direct apiary > certified brand > supermarket private label — always
- Below ₹400/500g is mathematically suspect
- The cold water drop test is your friend after purchase
